Why I’m Nuts about Almonds … and you should be, too! :)

almondsOne of my favourite snack foods are almonds. They are so versatile, and taste great in both savoury and sweet foods, but why are they good for us?

In terms of vitamins, almonds contain vitamin E, which is important for cardiovascular health and also acts as an antioxidant, working in the body to protect against free radical damage, which may cause some cancers and other degenerative diseases. Almonds also contain vitamin B2, or riboflavin, which helps with antioxidant protection, as it is one of the nutrients used in the recycling of glutathione, which is one of the most important antioxidants in the human body. B2 also, like all B vitamins, is required for energy production.

Almonds are also a good source of magnesium, a mineral that is important for good bone health, energy, and blood sugar control. Almonds are also a source of the trace minerals (which means minerals needed by the body in smaller amounts) manganese and copper. Manganese is used by the body in a variety of capacities. Manganese is important for bone health, and not getting enough of this mineral may result in poor bone formation. It is also involved in maintaining the skin integrity, as it is required for an enzyme called prolidase, which makes collagen, a structural component of skin.Copper is used in the body for antioxidant protection, energy support, as it helps with the incorporation of iron into red blood cells, and, like manganese, is also required for the production of collagen for skin health.

If almonds aren’t a regular part of your daily eating, they are super easy to introduce. Why not have some almonds in your muesli or porridge for breakfast, or with some fruit as a refreshing snack, or even at lunch in a nourishing salad?
